BioE Student Spotlight: Rida Mirza
Rida Mirza is a sophomore from Allentown, Pennsylvania, and has always felt a connection to Lehigh University. Growing up in the area, her family frequently drove around the campus, and its serene ambiance made a lasting impression on her. "I naturally fell in love with the ambiance of campus," she recalls, sharing how the beauty of Lehigh played a role in her decision to study there. However, it wasn’t just the campus atmosphere that sealed her choice. Lehigh’s strong reputation in engineering also factored heavily into her decision-making process, as she pursued a field that seamlessly blended her interests in science, medicine, and research.
Currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering program, Mirza has chosen a specialization in Biopharmaceutical Engineering with a minor in Health, Medicine, & Society. Her academic path is rigorous, but Mirza thrives in it, especially given her active involvement in the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), an organization that allows her to deepen her understanding of bioengineering beyond the classroom.
When asked why she decided to study bioengineering, Mirza’s answer reflects her passion for both the medical field and research: "I have always been interested in the medical field and research, and I felt that this major could encapsulate both aspirations." This major, she feels, has equipped her with a mix of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, both essential for her ultimate goal of becoming a neurologist. Mirza is on the pre-med track and is optimistic that her bioengineering background will give her a unique perspective in medical school. "I feel like a bioengineering degree helps me in both theoretical and practical learning because I can learn about the tools and methods used in the medical field," she explains.
Mirza’s academic journey is filled with memorable moments, but one, in particular, stands out. She fondly recalls her experience in ENGR 005, where she got to create a prosthetic finger. "That project really helped me picture what I can hopefully accomplish in the future," she shares. For Mirza, the hands-on application of engineering to solve real-world medical problems was a pivotal moment, solidifying her commitment to the field.
In her spare time, Mirza is passionate about health, enjoys engaging in bioengineering-related organizations, and continues to explore how her education can shape her future. As she looks ahead to medical school and her dream of becoming a neurologist, it’s clear that Mirza’s path is driven by her desire to make an impact in both the fields of medicine and bioengineering.
Beyond her academic endeavors, Mirza’s advice to current and future students is simple yet profound: "Making mistakes is required to succeed. Don’t give up even when there are bumps in the road." Her words reflect the determination and resilience required in such a challenging field, and they serve as a testament to her own journey through bioengineering.
