Undergraduate students from the Lehigh University chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) attended the 48th Annual NSBE Convention, held March 23-27, in Anaheim, CA.
Lehigh’s NSBE chapter sent a delegation of 18 students from the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science to the national convention in California. Two other students attended the convention virtually.
“It was an amazing experience,” says mechanical engineering junior Yafet Menjetta ’23. “We had the chance to have formal and personal conversations with employees from the top engineering companies in the world, network with many talented students, and meet Lehigh alumni.”
While at the convention, three Lehigh students also participated in the Boeing Flight Competition. For this event, teams of students designed, built, and flight-tested balsa-wood glider planes. Winners were determined based on flight path and finesse in execution of their build.
The Lehigh team placed fourth with their plane, Glider Hawk, and are hungry to try again next year.
“We are planning to go back and win it all next year!” says Majetta. The 2023 NSBE Annual Convention will be held in Kansas City.
Funds to support student travel to the NSBE national convention were raised by the Lehigh NSBE chapter and provided by contributions from the Lehigh University Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity, the Student Opportunity Fund, the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science, and several of the students’ home departments (Bioengineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Industrial & Systems Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering & Mechanics).
