Overview: The Operations Manager is a professional staff member within the Summer Engineering Institute office, located at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. An ideal candidate has familiarity with managing many high school students and establishing a collaborative, fun and safe environment. Supervised by the Director, the Operations Manager is responsible for the total operation of a residence hall area during the program. Duties include: supervising the student mentors; training, providing leadership for students and staff through programming and discipline; enforcing program, university and residence hall rules and regulations, purchasing program supplies; coordinating in-program transportation, acting as facilities manager for the residence area including overseeing maintenance and custodial concerns; additional responsibilities per the direction of the Dean of the College of Engineering.

Compensation for this position is $1,000 weekly, plus room and meals during the in-person program. Payment will be made on a semi-monthly basis. FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearance and Criminal Record check (required in the state of Pennsylvania to work with minors) is required and must be complete before the start of the program. The successful applicant will responsible for buying their own parking pass from the University, if they bring a car to campus.

Position Time Commitment (2025):

June 2 - 24: Day shifts, 8 hours a day in office on campus (approx. 40 hours/wk) NOTE: On-Campus residence begins on Wednesday, June 25 and ends Saturday, July 26.

June 25 - July 26: Some day responsibilities but mostly evening duties and overnights  

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred

Work Experience:

  • 1-3 years of supervisory or leadership experience preferred
  • Preferred to have a valid USA driver's license in good standing

Operations Manager Responsibilities:

Staff Supervision:

  • Work with Director to develop a Mentor Schedule prior to program start date
  • Work with Director to develop Transportation Schedule
  • Create and Implement the Day and Night Duty Log binders
  • Assist and participate in the training of student mentors
  • Supervise/discipline the student mentors
  • Tracking of Communication Reports and counseling of students/staff. Daily and/or weekly copies to Director.

Administrative:

  • Provide administrative program support in preparation of program
  • Interpret and enforce program policies and procedures within the residence hall
  • Work with mentors and students to help ensure the protection of individual rights
  • Be familiar with and communicate University rules and regulations to students
  • Act as a liaison with Residential Services, Facilities Services and Summer Engineering Institute offices
  • Perform administrative responsibilities for facilities management including residence hall common area and room inventory
  • Help to establish and carry out procedures for Opening Day, Closing Day, and security of the residence halls
  • Supervise the on-duty schedule for student mentors, making adjustments as needed; coordinate schedules for weekend and evening activities which may include off campus activities

Communication and Resource Referral:

  • Keep the Director up-to-date daily on activities and occurrences in the residence hall
  • Attend and participate in all staff meetings and training sessions
  • Know and be known by the high school students
  • Identify, work with, and refer to Director when appropriate, individuals who exhibit personal, social, and behavioral problems

Additional Duties:

  • Oversee mentors responsible for purchasing of foods/snacks and supplies for in-residence snacks and activities
  • Cooperate with the Summer Engineering Institute office in supporting staff decisions and efforts
  • Demonstrate initiative, dependability, and a positive attitude
  • Be available each evening during the 4-week program and orientation
  • Sleep in the residence hall each evening during the 4-week program and orientation
  • Maintain residence in housing for the duration of the SEI program
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director
