Quantum dots are nanoscale crystalline particles that act as semiconductors. When exposed to UV light, they emit energy in the form of light, and the size of the quantum dot determines the color it emits.
“So by tuning the particle’s size, you can essentially tune its optical properties,” says Mark Snyder, an associate professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering (ChBE) in Lehigh University’s P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science. “Which makes them interesting materials to use in applications like bioimaging.”

Professors Joseph Menicucci and Srinivas Rangarajan of Lehigh University’s Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department, along with Dr.
Everyday faculty are engaging in research and scholarship across many disciplines. To earn grant funding is no small feat. Each scholarly discovery not only offers new perspectives to the research and educational missions of the ChBE department at Lehigh but is also a testament of quality innovation hard at work.
Ricardo H.R. Castro, an award-winning researcher in the field of nanomaterials and a forward-thinking educator, is joining the Lehigh University faculty, and will assume the role of chair of its Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) as of April 1, 2023.
Professor Steven McIntosh has been named the inaugural Zisman Family Chair in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in Lehigh University’s P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science.
McIntosh, who joined Lehigh’s faculty in 2010, conducts research in the areas of catalysis, electrochemistry, materials chemistry, and reaction engineering. He was named chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering department in 2021.
The Lehigh ISE Department is delighted to announce that ISE Professor Lawrence V. Snyder was appointed to the Harvey E. Wagner Endowed Chair in Manufacturing Systems Engineering, effective July 1, 2022. Congratulations Larry!
