Pearson elected to Society of Plastics Engineers board

Ray Pearson, professor in the materials science and engineering department at Lehigh University, has been elected to the executive board of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE). His three year term as Vice President of Technology and Education begins in May 2018.

SPE, founded in 1942, is the largest, most well-known professional society in the world dedicated to plastics and polymers. The society has more than 22,500 members in 84 countries.

Lehigh has announced the formation of three Interdisciplinary Research Institutes (IRIs): the Institute for Functional Materials and Devices, the Institute for Data, Intelligent Systems, and Computation, and the Institute for Cyber–Physical Infrastructure and Energy.
 
Lehigh’s IRIs will create communities of scholars and will catalyze crucial research in areas in which Lehigh can take a leading position on the national and international stage and make lasting societal contributions.
 

Catch-and-release tumor cell detection device undergoes clinical trial

Lehigh professor engineers a better cancer blood test to detect early tumors
 
For years, bioengineer Yaling Liu has been in pursuit of the deadly tumor cell. Liu has been perfecting a microfluidic device the size of two quarters that has the ability to catch and release circulating tumor cells (CTCs)—cancer cells that circulate in a cancer patient’s blood. Such a device could lead to earlier detection of primary tumors and metastasis, as well as determine the effectiveness of treatment—all through a simple, non-invasive blood test.

Industrial and Systems Engineering welcomes Luis Nunes Vicente as new chair

Luis Nunes Vicente has been named the Timothy J. Wilmott '80 Endowed Faculty Professor and Chair of Lehigh University's Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE), effective August 1, 2018.
 
L. N. Vicente has been a professor of Mathematics at the University of Coimbra in Portugal since 1996. His research interests include continuous optimization, computational science and engineering, machine learning and data science.
