Lehigh University recognized several Rossin College faculty members with university-level awards during the 2019 Lehigh Faculty and Staff Appreciation Dinner held April 30 at Stabler Arena.
The Inmate Assignment Decision Support System (IADSS) developed by graduate students and faculty members in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering was featured on the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (PADOC) Podcast highlighting transformative innovation.
Arindam Banerjee, an associate professor of mechanical engineering and mechanics, studies the dynamics of materials in extreme environments. He and his team have built several devices to effectively investigate the dynamics of fluids and other materials under the influence of high acceleration and centrifugal force.
One area of interest is Rayleigh-Taylor instability, which occurs between materials of different densities when the density and pressure gradients are in opposite directions, creating an unstable stratification.
ISE Assistant Professor Martin Takáč was named the recipient of the PC Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science’s 2019 Richard P. Vinci Award for Educational Excellence. This award recognizes a Rossin College faculty member who has demonstrated effective teaching and/or enhanced the student learning experience by introducing innovative teaching methods into the classroom and shows an outstanding commitment to the success of their students. The award is named for the late Richard P. Vinci, professor of Materials Science and Engineering.
He was “a surprisingly normal person for being so smart.”
The quote was one of many memories shared by friends and loved ones of professor Richard P. Vinci that drew laughter and knowing nods from those who came to celebrate his life.
Jeff Trinkle has been named P.C. Rossin Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at Lehigh University, effective August 1, 2019.
Trinkle, an expert in advanced robotics who has held numerous academic and government roles since 1987, joins the Lehigh faculty after more than 15 years as a professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he chaired the computer science department from 2003 to 2009.
Clay Naito, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Lehigh University, has been elected as a Fellow of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI).
The award recognizes Naito’s outstanding contributions to the precast concrete structures industry and PCI in the areas of education, research, and service.
Arup K. SenGupta, P.C. Rossin Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Chemical Engineering, was invited to speak at 2019 Water Week, the flagship event of the World Bank Water Global Practice, held April 2 to 4 at World Bank Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
