Across higher education in science and engineering in the U.S., the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award is seen as clear validation that an up-and-coming faculty member exemplifies the role of teacher-scholar—and is growing into an academic-research powerhouse.
Today, nearly 30% of all active Lehigh engineering faculty members can lay claim to this prestigious award. And over the past few years, more than two-thirds of eligible new faculty have been successful in the CAREER proposals.
At Lehigh, these are not individuals who are "locked away" in rarified labs; rather, they are among the most active and vibrant leaders in our classrooms and in our community, engaging with students at all levels, colleagues, and partners while seeking solutions to some of the world's most pressing issues.
