Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium returns March 27

The David and Lorraine Freed Undergraduate Research Symposium, hosted by the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science, takes place from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 27, in the main lobby of the STEPS building.

The event brings together students from Lehigh University and Lafayette College to showcase undergraduate research achievement, celebrate experiential learning, and encourage students to use research to enrich their educational experiences.

ISE alum to deliver 2019 commencement address

Former U.S. Ambassador to India Richard Verma ’90, Vice Chair and Partner at The Asia Group and Lehigh trustee, will deliver the address at Lehigh’s 151st spring commencement on Monday, May 20.

Verma, whom Forbes called “one of the most consequential envoys to ever occupy the prestigious post,” is a distinguished and dedicated Lehigh industrial and systems engineering alum who has left his mark on the worlds of business, law, diplomacy, and the military.

Electrically-heated silicate glass appears to defy Joule's first law

Characterizing and predicting how electrically-heated silicate glass behaves is important because it is used in a variety of devices that drive technical innovations. Silicate glass is used in display screens. Glass fibers power the internet. Nanoscale glass devices are being deployed to provide breakthrough medical treatments such as targeted drug-delivery and re-growing tissue.

ISE to present Stacey Cunningham ’96 with the 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award for Excellence in Industry

Stacey Cunningham ’96 will be presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award for Excellence in Industry at the ISE Annual Banquet, taking place on May 2, 2019. Cunningham is the President of the NYSE Group which includes the New York Stock Exchange and a diverse range of equity and equity options exchanges, all wholly owned subsidiaries of Intercontinental Exchange (NYSE: ICE). She is the 67th President and the first woman to lead the NYSE Group in its 226 year history.

ISE welcomes R. Tyrrell Rockafellar for the 2019 Spencer C. Schantz Technical Talk

Ralph Tyrrell (Terry) Rockafellar, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics from the University of Washington, Seattle, will present the Spencer C. Schantz Lecture (Technical Talk), taking place in Mohler Laboratory Room 453 on April 24, 2019. Rockafellar’s lecture is titled “Risk and Reliability in Optimization Under Uncertainty” and will explore the role for so-called "measures of risk," which started to be developed for purposes like assessing the solvency of banks but now are being utilized much more widely.
