Beth Galetti '93: 'The woman behind Amazon's explosive growth'

As HR chief for Amazon—and its 647,000-plus employees—Beth Galetti '93 has "presided over a hiring spree of historic proportions," according to Fast Company, which featured the electrical engineering alumna in its May 2019 issue. 

The story credits Galetti's engineering and technology industry background with helping her succeed, despite coming into the role with no prior HR experience. 

CSE alum earns NSF CAREER award for AI research

With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), computer science and engineering alumnus Edward Kim ’13 PhD seeks to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) framework to mimic and model human intelligence and behavior.

Kim, who is an assistant professor of computing sciences at Villanova University and an expert in computer vision, was recently awarded a Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award from the NSF, providing nearly half a million dollars to fund his research over a five-year period.

CEE/ISE grad leads project development for Cedars-Sinai Marina Del Rey Hospital

Clark Construction marked Women in Construction Week (March 3-9) with a profile on Megan Calhoun '00 '01G, an alum of Lehigh's civil and environmental engineering and industrial and systems engineering departments. 

Calhoun, who has spent 17 year with the company, is a preconstruction director and manages various aspects of project development in Clark's Western Region. She currently leads project development for the Cedars-Sinai Marina Del Rey Hospital. 

Henrickson '03G leads manufacturing at Paragon Bioservices

Randy Henrickson '03G has been promoted to senior vice president of manufacturing for Paragon Bioservices, a private equity-backed, biologics contract development and manufacturing organization with a new, state-of-the-art 200,000-square-foot Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) gene therapy biomanufacturing facility in Maryland's Anne Arundel County. 

ChBE alum named Kuwait’s new oil minister

Khaled al-Fadhel ’01G ’05 PhD, a chemical engineering alumnus, has been named minister of oil and minister of water and electricity for Kuwait.

Al-Fadhel, who was appointed to the post in December 2018, had initially moved from academia to government in early 2018 to serve as undersecretary of commerce and industry. He is also now chairman of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC)

Shimer '79G '82 PhD joins Masimo board of directors

Julie A. Shimer '79G '82 PhD has been appointed to the board of directors of Masimo, a global medical technology developer and manufacturer of innovative noninvasive patient monitoring technologies based in Irvine, California. 

Shimer, who holds both a master’s and a doctorate degree in electrical engineering from Lehigh University, as well as a bachelor's degree in physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, is currently a private investor and has more than 30 years of product development experience.

Steven Brown '10 named an 'emerging engineer' at GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy

MechE grad Steven Brown '10, a lead seismic analysis engineer at GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, was recently recognized by the company as an "emerging engineer" during National Engineers Week (February 17–23, 2019).

Brown was credited for his technical expertise and adaptability, which have helped him successfully tackle projects in areas such as manufacturing, criticality safety, ceramic fuels, and structural engineering that go beyond the typical job description of someone in his role. 

Liz King '79 joins Quantum as chief revenue officer

Quantum Corp. has announced that Elizabeth (Liz) King '79 has joined the company as chief revenue officer. King, who studied mechanical engineering at Lehigh, brings more than 25 years of experience in global sales, with leadership positions spanning enterprise, public sector and telecom industries in over 30 countries. A veteran in the information technology market, she has held key executive leadership roles in sales, general management, product management, services, marketing, supply chain and operations on a global scale.
