The Health Systems Engineering (HSE) Master of Science (MS) program, offered by Lehigh's world-class Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, equips students with systems thinking tools and engineering methodologies to measure and improve the performance of complex healthcare systems. It is what the Institute of Medicine, the Agency for Healthcare Research on Quality, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation advocate to increase efficiency, decrease costs, reduce errors, and to improve access and the overall value of care.

Health Systems Engineering program format

The Master of Science in Health Systems Engineering is available both on-campus and online. The 30-credit curriculum (10 courses) is rigorous, yet designed with flexibility to allow students to choose a path suited to their desired pace. The curriculum offers systems-based perspectives, has an analytical focus, employs project-based learning, and leverages a multi-disciplinary approach to learning.

Students collaborate with partnering institutions to complete a semester-long capstone project, solving a real-world prolbem in the healthcare space. Our industry partners benefit from novel solutions while collaborating with faculty to provide mentorship to our students. Current and past industrial collaborators include Geisinger, NY Presbyterian Hospital, Mayo Clinic, American Hospital Dubai, Fox Chase Cancer Center, VA Medical Center, St. Luke's University Health Network, Lehigh Vally Health Network, and B. Braun Medical.

Master's in Health Systems Engineering admissions requirements

To be considered for admission to the master's program, candidates must hold at least a Bachelor of Science (or equivalent) degree in a related field. A complete application must include:

  • A candidate's personal statement detailing their motivation for graduate study and research interests.
  • The candidate's resume summarizing background relevant to graduate study.
  • Complete transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Unofficial copies may be uploaded initially, but official transcripts are required upon accepting an offer of admission.
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation from qualified individuals.
  • For international students whose first language is not English who have not studied in the US or countries where English is an official and widely spoken language, TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, or Cambridge English Qualification test scores are required.
  • A non-refundable application fee of $50.
  • GRE test scores are not required.
