Graduate Degrees offered: Ph.D. in Computer Science

Ph.D. Program in Computer Science

Training the next generation of research leaders. Students in the Ph.D. program receive training to perform novel and independent research in computer science.  The training typically requires between four and six years of study, beginning with coursework and quickly transitioning into a focus on research activities.  These activities include the development and pursuit of original research plans and the presentation and defense of research findings in publications and at international conferences.  The degree culminates in a written thesis and public oral defense, demonstrating the candidate’s abilities as an independent researcher.  Alumni of the  Ph.D. program form a large and supportive professional network in academic and corporate research, which serves as a foundation for lifelong advancement.

A dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment.  Ph.D. students in computer science work closely with the dynamic faculty of the Computer Science and Engineering department.  Together, they contribute to the full spectrum of computing research, including Artificial Intelligence, Bioinformatics, Embedded Systems, Human-Centered Computing, Machine Learning, Networking, Robotics, Social Computing, and Systems.  Many projects incorporate computational research in interdisciplinary settings, through collaborations with colleagues in other departments at Lehigh, at other universities, and at corporate research labs.

Financial Support. Ph.D. students are supported through several financial mechanisms, most generally categorized as research assistantships (RA), teaching assistantships (TA), and fellowships. All support mechanisms generally include a monthly stipend and tuition. Up to 20 hrs. per week of work assignments are associated with TA and RA positions. Fellowships require no service. Financial support is merit-based, not need-based.
